How NZ GST maths works

New Zealand’s standard GST rate is 15% (Inland Revenue). To take GST off a total that already includes GST, divide by 1.15. To find the GST component from an exclusive amount, multiply by 0.15. To add GST, multiply the exclusive amount by 1.15.

Example: $115 incl GST → $115 ÷ 1.15 = $100 ex GST, and GST = $15. Or $100 ex GST → GST = $100 × 0.15 = $15, total $115.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate GST from a total in NZ?

If the price already includes GST, divide the total by 1.15 to get the exclusive (ex GST) amount. Then GST = total − exclusive. Example: $230 ÷ 1.15 = $200 ex GST; GST = $30.

How do I take GST off a price?

Use the “GST-inclusive” mode above, or manually divide by 1.15. Do not multiply by 0.15 on an inclusive total — that overstates GST. Always divide inclusive amounts by 1.15 first.

Is GST 15% in New Zealand?

Yes. The IRD standard goods and services tax rate is 15%. Some supplies are zero-rated or exempt; this calculator is for the standard 15% rate only. Confirm special cases with IRD or your accountant.

How do I add 15% GST?

Multiply the exclusive amount by 0.15 for the GST dollars, or by 1.15 for the inclusive total. Example: $80 × 1.15 = $92 incl GST.
