What to compare when the dealer says "only $X a week"

Weekly repayments hide the term and the total interest. Two loans can both be "$150 a week" while one costs $4,000 more because it runs a year longer or has a balloon. Always compare the total cost of credit (interest plus fees), and check whether the rate is fixed. Under the CCCFA lenders must disclose these figures — ask for the disclosure statement before you sign.

Balloon payments

A balloon (or residual) lowers the regular repayment by leaving a lump sum to pay at the end. It suits people who plan to sell or refinance at that point, but you pay interest on the balloon amount for the whole term and can end up owing more than the car is worth. This calculator shows the interest cost so you can see the trade-off.

Assumptions and sources

Repayment Standard amortising loan with fees capitalised; balloon treated as a lump sum at the end of the term.
Frequency Interest rate divided by the number of payments per year (weekly/fortnightly/monthly).

Consumer protection Lenders must disclose total cost of credit under the CCCFA — consumerprotection.govt.nz

Frequently asked questions

What is a good interest rate for a car loan in NZ?

In 2026, secured car loans from banks and credit unions for newer vehicles typically sit around 8–12%; dealer and finance-company loans for older cars or weaker credit run 13–20%+. Your rate depends on the vehicle's age, your credit history and whether the loan is secured.

Is it better to get car finance from the dealer or the bank?

Neither is automatically cheaper. Get a pre-approval from your bank or credit union first, then let the dealer try to beat it — compare total interest and fees, not the weekly figure.

Can I pay off a car loan early in NZ?

Usually yes, but fixed-rate loans can charge a break fee and some charge an early-repayment fee — check the contract. Even with a fee, paying extra early often saves more in interest than the fee costs.

Does the calculator include insurance?

No. Comprehensive insurance, mechanical breakdown insurance and payment-protection insurance are often sold with the loan; add them to the fees line if they are financed, and decide separately whether you need them.
