Which holidays are included

New Year's Day and 2 January, Waitangi Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Anzac Day, King's Birthday, Matariki, Labour Day, Christmas Day and Boxing Day — with the Mondayisation rules that apply when Waitangi, Anzac, Christmas, Boxing or the New Year days fall on a weekend. Regional anniversary days are excluded because they differ by province; if one falls in your range, subtract a day.

Working days in NZ tenancy and legal deadlines

Many statutory deadlines are in working days rather than calendar days. The Residential Tenancies Act defines a working day as any day except Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, and the period from Christmas to mid-January — so a bond that must be lodged within 23 working days over the summer break can be due later than a simple count suggests. Use this calculator as a first check and confirm the specific Act's definition for anything that matters.

Frequently asked questions

How many working days are there in a year in NZ?

Around 250–252: 52 weeks × 5 days = 260, less roughly 11 national public holidays that fall on weekdays (12 in years when 2 January is a weekday) and a regional anniversary day.

Is Matariki a public holiday?

Yes, since 2022. It falls on a Friday in June or July each year — 10 July 2026 and 25 June 2027.

What does Mondayisation mean?

If Waitangi Day, Anzac Day, Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year's Day or 2 January falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the public holiday is observed on the following Monday (or Tuesday) for employees who would not otherwise work that weekend day.

What counts as a working day for a tenancy bond?

Under the Residential Tenancies Act, a working day excludes Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays and the days from 25 December to 15 January (inclusive). Bonds must be lodged with Tenancy Services within 23 working days of receipt — tenancy.govt.nz
